Each lagoon has its own color, its own story, its own energy. Some shine in deep turquoise, others in vibrant green, and some in an intense sapphire blue. And all are embraced by the majestic Apu Ausangate, the sacred mountain of the Incas.

Hiking among glaciers, snow-capped peaks, free-roaming alpacas, and natural hot springs is not something you can fully describe in words—it’s something you must experience deeply.

  • Laguna Hatun PucacochaHatun means “big” in Quechua. One of the largest lagoons, located at the base of Ausangate. A mirror where sky and snowy peaks blend into absolute peace.

  • Laguna Qomercocha – The “Green Lagoon,” with mysterious tones created by natural minerals. Surrounded by soft hills and alpaca pastures.

  • Laguna Orco OtorongoOrco means “male,” Otorongo means “jaguar.” This lagoon carries the wild, protective energy of the feline spirit.

But beyond the physical benefits, imagine soaking in hot water while gazing directly at the snow-capped Ausangate Mountain. Many travelers say that here, they end their day feeling that something inside them has changed.

Important Recommendations to Enjoy This Adventure

Hiking to the 7 Ausangate Lakes is an unforgettable experience, but it’s also a physical and mental challenge due to the altitude and weather conditions. Here are some key tips to make the most of it safely and comfortably:

Prior Acclimatization (very important!)

  • Stay at least 2 days in Cusco before the hike. This allows your body to adjust to the altitude.

  • Avoid alcohol, heavy meals, and intense physical activity in the days leading up to the trek.

Physical Preparation

  • You don’t need to be an athlete, but a reasonable fitness level is recommended. Doing short hikes or moderate exercise before your trip will help.

  • Walk at your own pace. It’s not about speed—it’s about enjoying the journey.

Constant Hydration

  • Drink plenty of water before, during, and after the hike. Carry a reusable water bottle.

  • Coca tea or altitude sickness pills (soroche pills) can also be useful for prevention.

Remember

This hike takes place between 4,300 – 4,600 meters above sea level, so you may feel fatigue, shortness of breath, or even altitude sickness. This is normal. Our guide will be with you at all times, providing oxygen and assistance if needed.

The weather can change quickly—from strong sun to icy winds to light rain, sometimes all in the same day! Being well-prepared is essential.

The experience is challenging… but absolutely worth it. What you will see and feel will stay with you forever.

Frequent Asked Questions About 4-day Inca Trail Tour

How difficult is the Ausangate 7 Lakes Trek?

The trek is considered moderate to challenging due to the altitude (4,300–4,600 m / 14,100–15,100 ft). The walking time is about 4–5 hours, but it is doable for travelers in good physical condition.

Do I need to be acclimatized before the trek?

Yes. We strongly recommend staying at least 2 days in Cusco prior to the trek to help your body adjust to the altitude and avoid altitude sickness.

What is the best time of the year to do the 7 Lakes Trek?

The best months are April to November (dry season), when the skies are clearer, and trails are more stable. However, the trek is available year-round. During the rainy season (December–March), you may see snow, which adds a magical touch but makes conditions more unpredictable.

Can I bathe in the hot springs after the trek?

Yes. After the hike, you can relax in the Pacchanta hot springs, with an incredible view of Ausangate Mountain. Entrance is included in the tour.

Is this trek suitable for children?

It is not recommended for very young children due to the high altitude. Teens and active children used to hiking can join with parental supervision.

What kind of wildlife will I see?

You may encounter alpacas, llamas, vizcachas, and, with some luck, even condors.

What happens if I feel altitude sickness?

Our professional guides carry first aid kits and oxygen. In case of strong symptoms, we will assist you immediately and adapt the pace.

Why choose the Ausangate 7 Lakes Trek instead of Rainbow Mountain?

The 7 Lakes Trek is less crowded than Rainbow Mountain, offers a variety of colorful lagoons, and provides a deeper connection with Andean culture and nature. It’s a perfect choice if you prefer tranquility and authenticity.
