One-Day Inca Trail Itinerary
Km 104 – Chachabamba – Wiñay Wayna – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu
Your unforgettable adventure begins early in the morning with a 4:00 AM hotel pickup in Cusco. From there, we’ll transfer you to the Ollantaytambo train station, where you’ll board the Expedition Train at 6:10 AM. Enjoy a scenic 1.5-hour journey through the Sacred Valley, surrounded by breathtaking mountain views and the Urubamba River flowing below.
Our trek starts at Kilometer 104 (2,100 m / 6,927 ft), the official entry point of the Inca Trail. After passing the checkpoint, we’ll explore Chachabamba, an impressive Incan archaeological site believed to have served as a religious and administrative center for travelers heading to Machu Picchu.
From here, we begin a three-hour uphill hike along original Incan stone paths surrounded by an enchanting ecosystem. Along the way, you’ll encounter:
Colorful orchids and diverse native flora
Exotic birds and, if lucky, even Spectacled Bears
Waterfalls cascading through the lush mountainside
After this climb, we’ll reach Wiñay Wayna (2,650 m / 8,747 ft), meaning “Forever Young” in Quechua. These impressive terraces and sacred ruins are one of the Inca Trail’s hidden gems. We’ll pause here for a well-deserved rest and enjoy a delicious box lunch prepared for you.
Recharged, we continue towards the famous Inti Punku or Sun Gate (2,730 m / 9,007 ft). As you step through this legendary spot, you’ll witness your first breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu — an unforgettable moment!
We’ll then descend to the upper sector of Machu Picchu (Circuit 1), where your guide will share fascinating insights about the history, architecture, and mysteries of the Lost City of the Incas.
Optional Upgrade: For USD $50 extra, you can choose Circuit 2 or Circuit 3, which offer alternative routes with unique perspectives and photo opportunities within the archaeological site.
After your guided visit, we’ll take the Consettur bus down to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), where you’ll have free time to relax before boarding your return train to Ollantaytambo. Finally, a private transfer will bring you back to Cusco, arriving in the evening. (Please note that train schedules may vary based on availability.)
