Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 4 days
Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer by car from Cusco to Km 82 (Inca Trail Entrance).
Our unforgettable journey to Machu Picchu through the classic Inca Trail begins right at your hotel. Around 6:00 – 6:30 am, after breakfast (optional), our team from Russell Experience Peru Travel will pick you up and take you on a 2 to 2.5-hour scenic drive to the starting point of our trek, known as Km 82.
Upon arrival, you’ll need to show your Inca Trail permit, original passport, and your ISIC card (if applicable). Here, our adventure truly begins!
We’ll start our hike with a gentle two-hour walk toward Miskay, a peaceful spot where we’ll stop to enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by our expert chef. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscapes, full of vibrant flora and stunning Andean views.
After lunch, we’ll continue our trek with another two-hour hike toward Wayllabamba (3,000 m / 9,843 ft), where we’ll set up camp for the night. We aim to arrive around 5:00 pm, giving you time to relax and soak in the surrounding beauty. At 6:30 pm, we’ll gather to enjoy a hearty dinner prepared by our professional cook, followed by a peaceful evening under the stars.

Day 2: Wayllabamba – Dead Woman’s Pass – Pacaymayo
The second day of our classic Inca Trail adventure begins bright and early. At 5:30 am, our friendly guides from Russell Experience Peru Travel will gently wake you up with a warm cup of coca tea to help you prepare for the day ahead. After enjoying a nutritious breakfast at 6:00 am, we’ll start our challenging yet rewarding trek at around 6:30 am.
Our first hike of the day takes approximately 5 hours (7 km / 4.3 miles) as we ascend to the famous Warmiwañusca Pass, commonly known as Dead Woman’s Pass. Standing at an impressive 4,600 m / 15,091 ft, this is the highest point of the Inca Trail. Once at the top, you’ll have the chance to connect deeply with the Andes and, according to local legend, experience the spirit of the woman said to inhabit the mountain.
From here, we begin a 2-hour descent toward our next campsite at Pacaymayo (3,600 m / 11,811 ft), where we’ll finally enjoy a well-deserved lunch after 7 hours of trekking in total.
The rest of the afternoon is yours to relax and recharge. As the sun sets, we’ll gather for a hearty dinner at 6:30 pm, followed by a cozy night under the clear Andean skies. Make sure to snuggle into your sleeping bag — the nights here can get quite cold.
Day 2 Overview
Meals Included: Breakfast, water, lunch, snacks, afternoon tea, and dinner
Accommodation: Comfortable camping facilities
Distance: 16 km / 10 miles
Difficulty Level: Moderate to Challenging
Hiking Time: Approximately 9 hours
Terrain: Mountain paths, steep ascents, and long descents
Day 3: Pacaymayo – Phuyupatamarca – Wiñay Huayna
Our third day on the classic Inca Trail is one of the most beautiful and rewarding parts of the entire journey. We’ll wake up at 6:00 am and enjoy a hearty breakfast prepared by our talented chef at 6:30 am. At around 7:00 am, we’ll begin our trek, ready to explore some of the most fascinating Inca ruins along the trail.
Our first stop is the Runkurakay ruins (3,800 m / 12,467 ft), which we’ll reach after about one hour of uphill hiking. From there, we’ll continue ascending for another hour to the Runkurakay Pass (4,000 m / 13,123 ft), where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Andes.
The trek becomes easier and more relaxed as we descend for about 45 minutes toward the Sayacmarca ruins (3,580 m / 11,745 ft), an impressive archaeological site rich in history and mysticism. After exploring the site, we’ll walk 25 minutes to Chaquicocha (3,600 m / 11,811 ft), where we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch in the middle of an awe-inspiring natural landscape.
After lunch, we’ll continue with a one-hour hike to Phuyupatamarca (3,600 m / 11,811 ft), known as the “Town Above the Clouds” due to its incredible location. Here, we’ll visit the last Inca construction of the day before starting an easy two-hour descent toward Wiñay Huayna (2,600 m / 8,530 ft), our final campsite.
In the evening, our chef will prepare a special buffet dinner at 6:30 pm to say goodbye to the porters and chefs, sharing a heartfelt moment with the team that has supported us along the way.
If you still have energy after the hike, you’ll have the option to visit the archaeological site of Wiñay Huayna, just 5 minutes from our campsite. With its beautiful terraces and ruins, this hidden gem is one of the most charming sites on the Inca Trail.

Accommodation: Comfortable camping facilities with hot showers
Distance: 10 km / 6.2 miles
Difficulty Level: Moderate

Day 4: Wiñay Huayna – Inti Punku – Machu Picchu Guided Tour
The final day of our unforgettable journey along the classic Inca Trail begins very early so we can witness one of the most magical moments of the trek — our first view of Machu Picchu at sunrise.
We’ll wake up at 3:30 am and enjoy a light breakfast at 4:00 am. Then, we’ll start hiking toward the first checkpoint, which opens at 5:30 am. From here, it’s about a one-hour trek along a mystical path surrounded by clouds and lush greenery until we reach the Inti Punku or Sun Gate (2,720 m / 8,923 ft).
Arriving at the Sun Gate is a life-changing experience. As the first rays of sunlight touch the ancient stones of Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas reveals itself below — an unforgettable sight that will stay with you forever. We’ll rest here for about 20 minutes to fully absorb the energy and beauty of the Andes.
From Inti Punku, we’ll continue with a 10-minute descent toward the entrance of Machu Picchu. Here, we’ll leave our backpacks in the storage area (cost: 3 soles per bag) and present our passport, entry ticket, and ISIC card (if applicable) at the second checkpoint.
Then, your professional guide will lead a two-hour tour (8:00 am – 10:00 am) through the sacred temples, ceremonial centers, terraces, and royal quarters of Machu Picchu. You’ll learn about its mystical history, ingenious architecture, and spiritual significance.
After the guided tour, you’ll have free time to explore the citadel at your own pace, take stunning photos, and soak in the unique atmosphere of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the afternoon, we’ll take the shuttle bus down to Aguas Calientes to catch the train back to Cusco via Ollantaytambo. The Expedition Train departs at 6:30 pm, arriving at Ollantaytambo after about two hours. From there, a private bus transfer will bring us back to Cusco, arriving around 10:30 pm.
This marks the end of our Inca Trail adventure, but the memories and energy of Machu Picchu will remain with you forever.
