The name comes from the Quechua words <strong data-start=\"1413\" data-end=\"1432\">\u201cQeswa\u201d (braid)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1437\" data-end=\"1457\">\u201cChaka\u201d (bridge)<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"1460\" data-end=\"1696\">This remarkable bridge spans approximately <strong data-start=\"1503\" data-end=\"1524\">30 meters (98 ft)<\/strong> across the <strong data-start=\"1536\" data-end=\"1561\">Apur\u00edmac River canyon<\/strong> and hangs more than <strong data-start=\"1582\" data-end=\"1611\">15 meters above the river<\/strong>. It is entirely made from <strong data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"1672\">hand-woven ropes of ichu grass<\/strong>, a native Andean fiber.<\/p><p data-start=\"1698\" data-end=\"1925\">Each year, the four surrounding communities come together to rebuild the bridge using ancestral knowledge passed down for centuries.
